Scope and Contents
Correspondence between D.G.M. Bernard, D.F. Landale and L.N. Leefe, Matheson & Co. Ltd, and G.L. Allardyce and James Steuart, J.C. & A. Steuart, W.S., Edinburgh, with related correspondence, including semi-official letters from Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, to D.F. Landale.
There are many related documents, including an agreement for Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd to be the Managers and Agents of Sir R.W.B. Jardine's properties in the Far East for 5 years from 1 May 1924, dated 13 February 1925; a preliminary rough estimate of the value of Jardine's estate and an estimate of his estate in the East, 11 February 1927; a memorandum by J.C. & A. Steuart regarding Jardine's estate, including sections on death duties and finance generally and on the conveyance of the Scottish estate to Sir J.W.B. Jardine and security for Lady Jardine's annuity, enclosed with a letter from G.L. Allardyce to D.F. Landale, 8 August 1927; a copy of a certificate, 'In the matter of Sir Robert William Buchanan Jardine, Bart., deceased', 'as to estate of deceased and payment of Estate Duty thereof in Hong Kong', by Charles McIlvaine Messer, Estate Duty Commissioner of the Colony of Hong Kong, 21 July 1928, enclosed with a letter from Allardyce to Landale, 27 December 1928; and a list of investments with regard to the marriage settlement of Ethel, Lady Buchanan-Jardine, December 1929, enclosed with a letter from Allardyce to Landale, 13 March 1930.
A set of papers found loose inside the ring-binder have been stored in an envelope. They are comprised of four copies of Sir R.W.B. Jardine's Trust Disposition and Settlement, 28 February 1920, including relative codicils of 3 January 1921, 11 January 1921 and 28 January 1925, compiled by J.C. & A. Steuart, 1925, and a copy of a letter from James Steuart, London, to Sir J.W.B. Jardine, Lockerbie, 25 November 1930, regarding the Prince de Chimay.
The subjects covered in the file include Eastern property; a property agreement with Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd; the reclamation of Marine Lot 365; the marriage settlement of Ethel, Lady Buchanan-Jardine; and Jardine's executry. The ring-binder is labelled 'Estate. Sir R.W.B. Jardine'.
