Correspondence re company for Sir R.W.B. Jardine's properties, 1 Apr. 1915-25 May 1916

Scope and Contents

Correspondence regarding a scheme for the transfer of Sir R.W.B. Jardine's Hong Kong and China properties to a new private limited company for the purpose of simplifying the administration and disposal of his estate:

1. A manuscript draft and two typescript copies of semi-official letter no. 1118 from Matheson & Co. Ltd to David Landale, Hong Kong, 18 January 1915, explaining the scheme for the new company.

2. An original letter from David Landale, Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, to Henry Keswick, Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, 7 April 1915, enclosing four documents: a copy of a letter from Deacon, Looker, Deacon & Harston, Hong Kong, to David Landale, 1 April 1915; a memorandum by Deacon, Looker, Deacon & Harston regarding the scheme for the new company; a supplementary memorandum by the firm to accompany the draft memorandum and articles of association of this company; and two printed copies of the draft memorandum and articles of association of the company (one loose inside the file).

3. A copy of a letter from C.H. Ross, Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, to James Steuart (Sir R.W.B. Jardine's lawyer), Edinburgh, 10 May 1915, sending him a copies of the items in no. 2.

4. A copy of a letter from Matheson & Co. Ltd to Sir R.W.B. Jardine, Lockerbie, 25 May 1916, regarding an enquiry from the Yangtsze Insurance Company about the possibility of it purchasing a part of Lot No. 1, Ewo Hong, Shanghai, with a translation of a cablegram from John Johnstone, Jardine Matheson, Shanghai, 18 May 1916, on this subject.

5. An original letter from James Steuart, Edinburgh, to C.H. Ross, London, 26 May 1915, in reply to his letter of 10 May.

The ring-binder is labelled 'Sir R. Jardine's China Properties. Proposal for a Limited Company.'
