[Fishes, Mauritius], 1917 - 1924
Scope and Contents
105 x 90 mm. Showing fish in a pool coming to be fed. Sir Geoffrey Archer records that when Bell became Governor of Mauritius in 1916: '... he built, at the bottom of Government House garden, an aquarium juting out into the sea. There he used to exercise an almost uncanny fascination for the deep-sea fish which, at a sign from him, would come swimming up to the surface to be tickled and fed.' (Archer 1963, p 44).
This aquarium, being on the seashore, is presumably the one built by Bell at Blue Bay, not Government House, and mentioned in his diary synopsis for September 23-24. Government House, Port Louis is not situated on the waterfront.
