[Kahaya. King of Ankole], 1907
Scope and Contents
81 x 80 mm. Showing Bell, dressed in full uniform, standing beside Kahaya, with servants and other members of the King's retinue in the background: 'We reached Mbarara, the principal town of Ankole, ... Kahaya, the King of Ankole, met me on the boundary of his territory and accompanied me to Mbarara. He is an enormous fellow. About 25 years of age, but very boyish looking. He is at least 6'6" in height and broader in proportion. Quite a young giant and he would make a great sensation if he were taken to London. Not at all bad looking and has a pleasant expression. When he came to meet me he was wearing a long black johr, embroidered in the usual way and a white embroidered cap. The long gown accentuated his tallness and he looked every yard a king. I took some photos of him later and these I will send you to look at. He is the man I fined 1000 head of cattle but he showed not a trace of rancour and seemed, on the contrary, much impressed by my clemency. As he owns at least 50,000 head of cattle, the fine was a mere flea-bite to him.' (Bell 1907, February 1).
