Mopock (Ndebele) women and children, 1949
Scope and Contents
204 x 151 mm. The caption continues: 'wearing heavily beaded necklaces, anklets and arm bands, which have a foundation of thick ropes of grass, with strings of beads turned round. Copper and brass rings are also worn, these denote wealth. They also wear beautifully patterned bead and string aprons. Note the striped blanket, typical, usually having about five wide stripes in very good colours. Their heads are shaven, with little tufts of hair in patterns. Near Pretoria. 1949'. Although uncredited in this album, this photograph was probably taken by Dorothy Barker (Mrs Malcolm Barker). An identical photograph is held in the Killie Campbell Africana Library under the reference Album D23/001-231 Transvaal Tribes Album 1 [BRN 310829].
