General Bundle of Magazines and Journals, 1984 - 1997
Scope and Contents
Issues and tearsheets for various British and International magazines, journals and other publications; which contain articles and/or images relating to either Spitting Image, Spitting Image Productions Limited and its various activities, Roger Law or Peter Fluck. In some cases, Spitting Image is merely mentioned in passing. The following items are present:
1. Tearsheets from the 14 December 1985 (No. 25/26) issue of the Dutch magazine, 007, which contains an article on Spitting Image.
2. The February/March 1985 issue of the journal, Animation, produced by The Puppet Centre Trust. The front cover contains images of Spitting Image's Prince Charles [now King Charles III] and Diana, Princess of Wales puppets. Pages 46 to 48 features an article on the series.
3. Tearsheets from the 1 November 1996 issue of the British men's monthly magazine, Arena, which feature an article by Roger Law on animator, Nick Park, creator of the animated film series/characters, Wallace and Gromit.
4. The 20 March 1986 issue of the British weekly magazine, Building Trades Journal, which features the Spitting Image puppet of British Conservative politician, Nigel Lawson, on the front cover and on page 4.
5. Tearsheets from the 20 December 1995-2 January 1986 issue of the British weekly cultural magazine, City Limits Magazine, which feature an article on the upcoming third series of Spitting Image.
6. Tearsheets from the June 1996 issue of the short-lived British comedy magazine, Comedy Review, which feature an article on ventriloquism and puppetry on television.
7. Tearsheets from the June 1996 issue of the fashion magazine, Cosmopolitan, which feature an article on tourist trips to Europe's 'weirdest' destinations. The article mentions Spitting Image in passing.
8. Tearsheets from the 9 May 1996 issue of the British weekly magazine, Country Life, which feature an article on the British royal family as the targets of satire over the centuries. The article mentions Spitting Image.
9. The first issue of a spoof magazine or men's magazine, in German, Crocodil, dated 1987. Pages 18 to 25 feature an article with images on Spitting Image. Reader is advised that this item contain explicit female nudity.
10. The October 1993 (No. 30) issue of the British cultural magazine, Cuts, which features a Spitting Image puppet of pop musician, Sting, on the front cover and an article on the Spitting Swanns's theatrical production of Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, on pages 14 to 16 (SI/349 (b), 356 (a) and (c), 370 and 884).
11. Issue 41 (1985) of a Design and Art Direction magazine, which features an article on Roger Law and Peter Fluck on pages 32 to 34.
12. A 1988/1989 catalogue for the computer game company, Domark. The cover features the company owners on the front and back covers, accompanied by Spitting Image puppets. Page 2 has an advertisement for a Spitting Image game (SI/490 (a to c).
13. The June 1985 (Vol. 14, No. 6) issue of monthly magazine, Eastword, produced by the Eastern Arts Association. Page 4 contains a listing for the Spitting Image exhibiton at the Norwich School of Art Gallery.
14. The 17 October 1994 issue of the women's magazine, Elle, which is a special edition of the publication, focused on Jean Paul Gaultier. A Spitting Image puppet of Gaultier appears on the cover of the magazine and at various points throughout the publication (SI/768 (a to f).
15. The July/August 1990 (Vol. 11, No. 4) issue of the magazine, Eyepiece, which was the official publication of the Guild of British Camera Technicians. The front cover has an image taken of the set from Spitting Image Productions Limited's Winjin Pom children's series, and pages 12 to 15 feature an article on the making of the programme (SI/911 and 918 (c)).
16. The June 1989 (No. 295) issue of the Dutch magazine, Film en TV Maker. The front cover contains Spitting Image puppets, and pages 16 to 19 feature an article on the series.
17. The February 1992 (Vol. 3, No. 5) issue of the British environmentalist publication, Green Magazine. The cover features a photographic illustration with the Spitting Image puppets of the British politicians, John Major, Neil Kinnock and Paddy Ashdown. Images of puppets also appear on pages 1 and 13.
18. The January-March 1993 issue of the Virgin Atlantic Airline inflight magazine, Hot Air. Pages 14 to 19 features an article by Roger Law on Spitting Image.
19. The March 1992 (No. 3) issue of Impact, the magazine of the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television. There are photographs of Spitting Image puppets for British politicians, John Major, Neil Kinnock and Douglas Hurd; on pages 1, 8-9 and 11.
20. The spring 1997 (No. 28) issue of Inkspot, a magazine published by the Australian Black and White Artists' Club. Pages 36 to 39 feature an article on the organisation's annual Stanley Awards event, which Roger Law attended as guest of honour. There are various photographs of Law at the event. Held inside the magazine are loose pieces of paper, one containing a colour printout of a photograph, and the other a leaflet for 'The Inaugural Cartoonists' Brain Drain' trivia night.
21. A programme for Le Festival du Dessin Anime, which took place in Belgium between 23 February and 4 March 1990. Page 15 has a listing for several event presented by Roger Law.
22. The October 1986 issue of the American magazine, Life. Page 84 contains a group photograph of Spitting Image puppets, next to the River Thames. This image is in connection to the show's NBC special episode, Down and Out in the White House.
23. The April 1992 (No. 42) issue of Living Marxism, the journal of the British Revolutionary Communist Party. The front cover has an image of Spitting Image puppets for the 1992 British general election candidates, John Major, Neil Kinnock and Paddy Ashdown. Further images of these puppets are featured on pages 18 to 21.
24. The September 1986 inflight magazine for Turkish Airlines. Page 44 has an article (in Turkish) on Spitting Image (SI/1246).
25. Issue 5 (1989) of Manchester Student Review, the independent magazine of the Manchester Polytechnic Students Union. Page 10 has a photograph of the Spitting Image puppet for Prince Charles, which is holding a daffodil as a phone.
26. The spring 1992 issue of National Student Extra, the magazine of the National Union of Students. The cover features a photographic illustration of the Spitting Image puppets for British politicians, John Major and Neil Kinnock, two of the candidates for the 1992 general election.
27. The spring 1994 issue (Vol. 36, No. 2) of Notebook, the quarterly magazine of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. The publication contains a schedule for the association's upcoming convention between 8 and 11 June 1994, which mentions Roger Law's lecture on 9 June.
28. The 28 September-5 October 1997 issue of the Portuguese magazine, Olha! The front cover has an image of Roger Law with a puppet, and pages 16 to 20 feature an interview with Law. Accompanying the magazine is a fax from Mafalda Mendes de Almeida, which contains an English transcript of the interview.
29. A red album that contains tearsheets taken from various 1987 issues of the Spanish magazine, Panorama. Most of these tearsheets contain what appears to be comic strips, which use photographs of Spitting Image puppets to tell a story. There is also a couple of tearsheets that contain an article on the work at the Spitting Image Workshop. On the last page of the album, there are three polaroid photographs of a male puppet head.
30. The 1 September 1986 issue of the American magazine, People, which features a review of the Spitting Image NBC special episode, Down and Out in the White House.
31. The 23 January 1985 issue of the British satirical magazine, Punch. Page 48 contains an article on upcoming television programmes, which includes a paragraph on the upcoming second series of Spitting Image.
32. The first issue (1991) of the Central Television promotional magazine, Scene, which includes photographs of Spitting Image puppets as part of its contents.
33. The April 1993 issue of the German magazine, Spotlight. The front cover has a photograph of the Spitting Image puppet for Queen Elizabeth II, and pages 12 to 17 feature an article on the programme (SI/693 (b)).
34. The 26 February 1984 (No. 383) issue of the British newspaper supplement, Telegraph Sunday Magazine. The front cover has a photograph of Spitting Image puppets in a Rolls-Royce car, and pages 12 to 17 feature an article on the upcoming first series of the show (SI/978).
35. The 1 June 1984 issue of Television Weekly, which contains Spitting Image-related items on the front page and pages 16 and 17.
36. A tearsheet for the 1 May 1996 issue of the British television production magazine, Televisual. The tearsheet contains an article on animated programmes for adult audiences, and includes a still shot from the Spitting Image Productions Limited programme, The Strip Show.
37. The January 1985 (No. 57) issue of the British cultural magazine, The Face. Photographs of Spitting Image puppets accompany a number of articles in the publication, including one on the upcoming second series of the show on pages 32 to 35 (SI/121 (b), 722 to 727).
38. The 4-17 December 1992 (No. 190) issue of the magazine, The List, which advertises events in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The front cover has an image of the John Major 'Spitting Image' puppet, and has a review of the Roger Law/Spitting Image Productions Limited publication, 'A Nasty Piece of Work: The Art and Graft of Spitting Image,' on page 70. Accompanying the magazine is a leaflet for the bookstore, Waterstone's, which advertises events in Edinburgh for December 1992, including a talk by Law on his book.
39. The 11 August 1996 issue of The New York Times Magazine. Page 36 includes an image of the Luck & Flaw plasticine model illustration, which features Ronald Reagan and Leonid Brezhnev in the form of nuclear warheads (L+F/199).
40. The 24 August 1985 issue of The Spectator. Page 32 features an article on an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, relating to English caricature from 1620 to the present. The article mentions Spitting Image.
41. The 12 September 1988 issue of the American news magazine, Time. The front cover contains a plasticine model illustration of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, and pages 90 to 96 feature an article on cartoonists, which includes a photograph of Roger Law and Peter Fluck with Spitting Image puppets.
42. The 10 January 1987 (Vol. 35, No. 2) issue of the American television magazine, TV Guide, which has an advert for the Spitting Image NBC special episode, The Ronnie and Nancy Show, on page 143.
43. A tearsheet from the 24 February-3 March 1986 issue of the American fashion magazine, W, which features an article on Spitting Image.
44. Tearsheets from the 6 January 1985 issue of the British newspaper supplement, You, which feature an article on Spitting Image.
45. Tearsheets from the 3-16 November 1988 (No. 23) issue of the German magazine, Zitty, which includes material relating to Spitting Image.
46. A bundle of tearsheets from unidentified publicatioms.
Many of the tearsheets have been supplied by the company, Durrants Press Clippings.
