Chief Lewanika's State canoe and paddlers - Kazungula, 1910 - 1911

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y30546A/63

Scope and Contents

104 x 81 mm. A view from the riverbank showing the long wooden canoe being paddled by a large group of warriors. Lewanika (1842-1916) stands in the centre of the boat wearing a European jacket and hat. Litunga of Bulozi (King of Barotseland) from 1878-1884 and 1885 until his death in 1916, Lewanika (also known as Lubosi) had as one of the prime objectives throughout his reign the strengthening of Luzi power through an alliance with the British authorities. Unfortunately the alliances he made (in the form of concessions in the 1890s) placed him largely under the domination of Rhodes and the later years of his reign were spent in fruitless appeals to England for the nullification of these contracts until finally the Order in council of 1911 incorporated Barotseland into the larger unit of Northern Rhodesia (Zambia).
