Miscellaneous Magazines with Commissioned Work, 1975 - 1982
Scope and Contents
A box containing a variety of British and international magazines, along with tearsheets, which feature plasticine model illustrations by Luck & Flaw.
The following are present:
1. Issue November-December 1975 of the magazine, Drive, published by the British motoring association, The AA. Pages 16 to 22 feature illustrations that accompany an article about the MOT test. The photographic image was taken by Bob Cramp (L&F/90 (a)-(b)).
2. Issue February 1978 of the magazine, Conferences & Exhibitions, which features an illustration on the front cover of a man wearing an assortment of badges; photographic image taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/13).
3. A tearsheet containing a page from an unidentified 1975 issue of Cosmopolitan, which features the illustration 'Male Camaraderie;' photographic image taken by Bob Cramp (L&F/21).
4. Issue 29 September 1980 (No. 4) of the German weekly news magazine, Der Spiegel, which features a montage illustration on the front cover of the German politicians, Helmut Schmidt and Franz Josef Strauss; photographic images taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/209 (b) and 222 (b)). On page 3, there is also a photograph of Peter Fluck and Roger Law working on the Schmidt model.
5. Issue September 1976 (Vol. 20 No. 9) of the magazine, Gas Marketing, which features an illustration of an anthropomorphised tree that is part of an advertisement for the company, New World Gas Heating Limited; photographic image taken by John Lawerence Jones (L&F/137).
6. Issue May 1982 (Vol. 1 No. 4) of the magazine, Insight Magazine (Cambridge and Newmarket edition), which features an illustration of British Labour politician, Tony Benn; photographic image taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/266).
7. Tearsheets from an unknown issue of the magazine, Living, which features an advertisement for Smirnoff vodka. In this advertisement, Roger Law is dressed in a tuxedo while wearing a frog mask and gloves; photographer of the image is unknown (L&F/155).
8. Issue December 1975 of Management Today, which features three illustrations of the character, John Bull, between pages 50 and 57. These images accompany an article that examines Britain's economic future. Photographic images taken by Bob Cramp (L&F/22 (a)-(c)).
9. Issue July 1981 of Marxism Today, which features an illustration of Prince Charles and Princess Diana with a baby Prince William; photographic image by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/33).
10. Tearsheets from the August 1978 issue of the British pornographic magazine, Men Only, which contain a number of illustrations as part of a feature, Holiday Romances. These illustrations depict a number of odd couples: Margaret Thatcher and punk musician, Johnny Rotten; Rhodesian Prime Minister, Ian Smith, and American singer, Diana Ross; Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstrong-Jones; and Mae West and Roman Polanski. Photographic images taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/176-180). The reader is advised that these tearsheets contain explicit female nudity.
11. A tearsheet with the front and back cover for the March/April 1982 (No. 4) issue of New Socialist, which features an illustration of British politician, Roy Jenkins, depicted as a sommelier/waiter holding a bottle of wine; photographic image taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/158).
12. Issue 8-14 August 1980 (No. 48) of British news magazine, NOW!, which features an illustration of a battered and bruised President Jimmy Carter; photographic image taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/31).
13. Issue 23 September 1979 of Observer Magazine, which features A Christmas Carol illustrations on pages 66 to 69; photographic images taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/42, 45, 47, 50 and 56).
14. Issue December 1979 of pornographic magazine, Oui, which features an illustration on page 100 of American actor, Dustin Hoffman, depicted as a bronze statue; photographic image taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/148). The reader is advised that the magazine contains explicit female nudity.
15. Issue October 1979 of women's lifestyle magazine, Over 21, which features an illustration on page 33 of Queen Elizabeth II and the British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, having afternoon tea; photographic image taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/195).
16. Issue 4 December 1981 (No. 521) of British satirical magazine, Private Eye, which features on the cover an illustration of British Labour politician, Michael Foot, depicted as the television character, Worzel Gummidge, along with a representation of Margaret Thatcher as a pigeon on Foot's shoulder; photographic image taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/122 (a)).
17. Issue Oct/Nov 1981 (No. 5) of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament's magazine, Sanity, which features on the front cover an illustration of President Ronald Reagan and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev, both depicted as nuclear warheads (L&F/199).
18. Issue July 1982 (No. 21) of South: The Third World Magazine, which features an illustration of Mexican President, Lopez Portillo, on page 17; photographic image by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/188).
19. A mock-up of an unused cover for Time Magazine (Australasian edition; L&F/215).
20. Issue 10-16 August 1979 (No. 486) of Time Out, which features a print from a pencil drawing by Peter Fluck. This image relates to the 'Troops Out of Ireland!' demonstration, held at Hyde Park, London, on 12 August 1979 (L&F/228).
21. Issue 5-11 March 1977 (Vol. 86 No. 10) of the British television magazine, TV Times, which features an anthropomorphised car model, as part of a Mazda car advert; photographic image taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/29).
22. A tearsheet containing the front cover of The Sunday Times TV supplement, View, for the week 13-19 February 1983. The front cover has an illustration of British politicians, Enoch Powell and Tony Benn (L&F/189).
