Fort Victoria, 1890
Scope and Contents
Showing two circular ‘daga’ and thatch huts with a stone wall beyond and the Union Jack flying in the background. ‘On the plateau near the head of the Pass, the Column laagered, and on rising ground a short distance away Colonel Pennefather ordered the construction of a fort. Strong stakes were driven into the earth to stand about six feet above the ground, and branches were woven into the interstices between them. At a distance of about twenty feet from the stockade a ditch five feet deep and ten feet wide was dug, and the soil thrown up towards the walls, which were further fortified by sandbags', W.D. Gale in ‘One Man’s Vision: The Story of Rhodesia’ (London, 1935), p. 62). The column was laagered at Fort Victoria from August 13-19 but the presence of a substantial stone wall and the sun-cracked walls of the huts may indicate that Fry took this photograph at a later date, possibly in October when he evidently returned to Fort Tuli (see Y3052A/43-4).
