The University Archives are generally freely available to the holder of a reader's ticket for the Manuscripts Reading Room at Cambridge University Library, West Road, Cambridge CB3 9DR. Restrictions on access are imposed on certain categories of sensitive record: financial, governmental and personal, by order of the originating body or under data protection legislation. Access information, including opening hours and how to obtain a reader's ticket, appears as part of the Library's web site (www.lib.cam.ac.uk).

Biographical / Historical

The society is known to have existed from at least 1890 and was an intellectual and social society largely drawing its membership from medical students. It organised a speaker programme and social events. Further information about the club's activities is on its website at http://www.srcf.ucam.org/medsoc/.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The records were transferred to the University Archives from the Manuscripts Department on 18 October 2007. Item SOC.70.2 had been presented by Sir George Pickering, FRS, to the Manuscripts Department on 2 December 1977 and had been given the classmark Ms.Add.8165. Items SOC.70.1.1-2 had been deposited on permanent loan by Cambridge University Medical Society with the Manuscripts Department on 30 June 1978 and had been given the classmark Ms.Add.8174

See also Ms.Add.8165 which is a diary of a tour of medical schools in Canada and north-eastern United States of America. The volume is George Pickering's personal description of tour undertaken as member of the Medical Society. It gives an account of travel arrangements, details social events, and includes some notes on research and medical treatments being trialled at various schools visited. The schools included Montreal, Yale, and Harvard Universities, and the Rockefeller Institute. The tour by eighty students was organised and led by the President, James Simpson of Trinity College. 13 August 1926-10 September 1926.
