Scope and Contents

St John's Home, Oxford. Continued detail of the daily round at St John's and its residents; a mix of the gossipy and the spiritual; still battling occasionally with the Sr Superior; occasional visits to Cambridge. Health: unable to attend much chapel; 'graveyard cough'; bronchial trouble; writing very shaky at times; right eye almost sightless in May 1957; spends time at Hope House Nursing Home and is also nursed on a ward at St John's for a time. Is still writing and giving occasional talks: writes Memory Pictures of her father, her mother and Nadja for the Watchword, and gives a talk to a group of Methodist women on "Belonging to God". Visitors include Julius, Alethea, Freda Baron (formerly of SSC - news of same), the Lovells, Joan Cooper, the Zender Brownes, Phyllis Vaughan (formerly secretary to the Bishop of Ely), Eustace, Phyllis and Veronica. Deaths of friends, including Silvia Blennerhasset, nee Myers; Archie Venn; Mrs Keynes. Still misses Dr Wynn, the Bishop of Ely. Occasional visions and ecstasies; silent Fridays. Family: Alethea is still working for the CWAS, has a holiday in Spain in Sep. 1957, has a renewed bout of peptic ulcer trouble; Julius and Eustace have hernia and varicose vein operations respectively; Julius also has a prostate gland operation.
