Conventions regarding lease, 1365
Scope and Contents
This relates to a lease from William de Hoo of Barnham to William Hawethorn, parson of Barnham and concerns a fishery at Barnham with enclosure as out in the charter. (The 'charter' presumably incorporates the lease, but the description suggests that it also contains a bond, with this as the conditional defeasance.) Hawethorn concedes that if he, his heirs, and assigns have possession of the fishery with free access and exit from Michaelmas last past for ten years, charter not to be invoked. He will repair and maintain a way (via) called le Dam which leads from the capital messuage of William de Hoo in Barnham to the heath (brueram) of Snareshelle during the ten years, unless the damage is such that it requires 'fordammyng' or 'hemerdammyng'. If not repaired, William de Hoo can invoke charter. Rent of 2 s. p.a. for the fishery, payable to the lord of the manor of Snareshelle for the time being; rest of rent [unspecified] to William de Hoo. Ratified at Barnham on the Sunday after the Conversion of St Paul.
