This telegram requests confirmation of flights from Shanghai to Tokyo on 24 Sep. Includes a note of the flight number and times. The paper used to draft the telegram is cut from a magazine or journal with a black and white photograph of Joseph Needham accepting the Dickinson Memorial Medal from the President (this could be the Henry Winram Dickinson Memorial Medal granted by the Newcomen Society for the study of the History of Engineering and Technology).

The name on the photograph is hard to read; it may be Xu Zhumu 徐志穆 and it is dated 15 Jun. 1983. The letter is written in Chinese calligraphy, from Fan Wentong 范文通, graduate student at Shanghai Normal School (Shanghai shi fan xue yuan 上海師範學院). He planned to write a book about Joseph Needham, and to have it published by Hunan People’s publishing house (Hunan ren min chu ban she 湖南人民出版社).

A letter from Carole Sivin to Joseph Needham and Dorothy Needham mentions the 'blue clay Joseph Needham head' which was made in Kyoto in 1974 ( NRI2/9/5/10).
