Europe Hotel, Singapore, 1922, 1922

Scope and Contents 141 x 84 mm. Showing the Grand Hotel de l'Europe emblazoned along its length with the legend God Bless the Prince of Wales. Situated on the Esplanade near the Victoria Memorial Hall (part of which is visible at the left of the print), the hotel was established in 1857 and occupied the same site until the building was demolished in 1936. (Makepeace, ii, 197 and Tyers, p. 89). But see Turnbull (1975, p. 47) who dates the naming of the hotel somewhat later.

Farewell to J.D. Gimlette, Kelantan, circa 1916, 1915

Scope and Contents 264 x 233 mm (mounted on card). A group photograph of European officials, medical staff and orderlies gathered to say farewell to J.D. Gimlette. Other identified figures in the group are Mr and Mrs William Langham-Carter. The precise date of Gimlettes departure has not been determined, but this photograph must have been taken prior to August 1915, when Langham-Carter departed on furlough. Dr L.H. Taylor who took over from Gimlette, is seated at the left of the group.
