William James Downey, a chartered accountant, worked for Cooper Brothers before joining Matheson & Co. Ltd in 1969. He was a Director of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd, 1972-1984, and its Finance Director, 1973-1983. He joined Willis Faber in 1984, and retired in 1994.
