Mountain Copper Co Ltd

 Organization

Biography

The Mountain Copper Co. Ltd was formed by Matheson & Co. Ltd in 1896 to operate the Iron Mountain copper mine near Redding, California. It was reorganised and registered in 1902. The company mined pyrites deposits, which were sought principally for their sulphur content for use in the manufacture of sulphuric acid. It also owned a refining plant in New Jersey (New Jersey Metal Refining Works Ltd) and a chemical and fertiliser plant at Martinez, near San Francisco. In 1904 it acquired the San Francisco Chemical Co., which operated substantial phosphate rock deposits in Idaho and Wyoming.
