The Rev. Dr Carstairs Douglas was the dedicated leader of the missionary effort in Amoy from 1855 until his death from cholera in 1877. The Church, opened in 1880, was paid for from his estate on the initiative of his brother, Principal Douglas of the Free Church College, Glasgow, Edward Band, ‘Working his purpose out: the history of the English Presbyterian Mission, 1847-1947' (London, 1948), pp. 231-233).

Kulangsu, Amoy [c 1900], 1900
257 x 208 mm. View from a hill on the small island of Kulangsu looking down on the town and across the bay towards the town of Amoy itself. The town of Amoy is situated on the south west corner of Amoy Island, with Kulangsu Island in the bay facing the town. Kulangsu was first occupied by a British garrison in 1842, but was not made an international settlement until 1903.
