The caption is taken from Meinecke (1899) where the photograph is reproduced as a woodcut with the following explanation (roughly translated):'Many millions of marks of ivory produce was shipped to Zanzibar through the old customs port at Bagamoyo. A handwritten caption on a piece of paper accompanying the image reads: 'Baobab trees; a familiar sight in areas of East Africa so dry that trees have developed their own method of storing moisture.
