The streets thus narrow and twisting afford shade from the hot sun during most hours of the day. Veiled Arab women are seen in the foreground. Their eastern dress contrasts curiously with their European footwear of latest design.'

The caption continues: 'The Sultan of Zanzibar, an enlitend (enlightened?) ruler, has allowed photographs to be taken of his wife, his son, his home and of religious celebrations which have been unprocurable hitherto. Picture shows: His Highness Khalifa 11, the Sultan of Zanzibar photographed in the Baraza or main reception room of the palace, a long narrow room lined with gilt mirrors and furnished with gilt couches upholstered in scarlet plush.'
