A note states 'Sparks and blazing material carried from lower end of square by force of gale, these set a stack of forage alight near the corner and soon adjoining buildings were in a blaze, the fire gradually extending to the whole block.'

The crane 'Hercules', which arrived in East London in 1875, can be seen at the end of the breakwater. Railway lines run to the newly built wooden wharves in the foreground.

Identified among the ruins are the Club, Dyer and Dyer, Gasson and Co. and Dunn and Co. A note states: 'Fire originated at the back of above [Dunn and Co.] and extended the whole length of block, burning matter flew from this building [Dyer and Dyer] to the top of Market Square.’
