An ostrich farm, 1899 - 1900

219 x 166 mm. Showing a troop of ostriches on C.D. Charlwood's farm at Graaff Reinet, with a figure seated in a ponycart in the foreground. By 1891 Graff Reinet was the sixth largest producer of ostrich feathers in the colony, although the trade has now completely disappeared from the area. The print is signed 'Roe W Phor.'

195 x 146 mm. A view looking along a path in the garden, with neatly laid out trees and shrubs along its borders. The gardens, founded in 1872, were taken up in the early years of the twentieth century to be replaced by the Urquhart Park Rugby and Cricket Ground.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: A printed book containing tipped-in reproductions from photographs, all measuring 140 x 100 mm, with brief letterpress captions beneath the prints. The captions have been recorded as found and may contain offensive, inappropriate or outdated terms. The prints are grainy with high contrast. Consequently, the images are listed rather than described in detail, although occasional notes and cross-references on points of interest have been added. The process used in the reproductions has not...

382 x 282 mm. A view looking eastwards over the neatly laid out streets of Graaff Reinet, with the Sundays River curving round the town and Spandau Kop in the background. The three most prominent strets seen here, running east-west, are Somerset Street, Middel Street and West Street. The print is signed 'W. Roe Photo' and has the following caption, written in calligraphy: 'Graaf Reinet, from the mountain top.'

It is however an album of the same type as those containing Fisher's own photographs and is labelled on the spine 'VIC South Africa Lectures IV, V, VI'. It appears to be a record album of the lantern slides used to accompany the Visual Instruction Committee lectures.
