109 x 153 mm. A full length portrait of Arthur Raikes (1867-1915) wearing the Brilliant Star of Zanzibar and a uniform probably of his own design and worn in connection with his work in Zanzibar. Raikes held the local rank of Brigadier General. He commanded the Sultan’s forces from 1894-1906 and was First Minister to the Sultan from 1906-1908.

Chukwani Palace, Zanzibar, 1901 - 1905
216 x 150 mm. A view looking across a small bay towards the Chukwani Palace, situated on a promontory about six miles south of Zanzibar Town. A covered flight of steps leads down from the headland to the beach in the foreground. Built by Sultan Seyyid Barghash as a summer resort, it was turned into quarters for government officers on the abdication of Sultan Seyyid Ali bin Hamoud 1911. Most of the Palace has now been demolished.
