The occupants of the coach are hidden but the occasion is possibly the visit of Dr Stuhlmann, acting Governor of German East Africa, who arrived in Zanzibar later on the same day as Prince Adalbert and whose carriage ‘was attended by a section of the mounted Body Guard’ (‘Zanzibar Gazette’, February 15th 1905). Stuhlmann visited the Residency for luncheon on Sunday February 12th 1905 and was decorated...

The walls in the background have been hung with black draperies. This is possibly the ‘beautiful photograph of this last resting place within the house’ taken by A.C. Gomes (‘Zanzibar Gazette’ 16/10/1901). See Y30468B/1 for a picture of Mathews during his lifetime.

Coming of age of Sultan Seyyid Ali bin Hamoud, Wednesday June 7th 1905, 1905-06-07

A view showing the front façade of the Sultan’s palace, the Beit el Ajaib, a few moments before the arrival of officials for the General Baraza (gathering) held to celebrate the Sultan’s coming of age and the end of the Regency. Troops line the entrance gates while the palace balconies are crowded with Arab and consular officials and a military band stands beside the palace steps. The ceremonies and celebrations are described in the ‘Zanzibar Gazette’ for June 14th 1905.
