Scope and Contents
294 x 213 mm. A view showing the coffin, covered in wreaths and with Mathews’ helmet placed on top, standing in a downstairs room of his house prior to the funeral. The walls in the background have been hung with black draperies. This is possibly the ‘beautiful photograph of this last resting place within the house’ taken by A.C. Gomes (‘Zanzibar Gazette’ 16/10/1901). See Y30468B/1 for a picture of Mathews during his lifetime.
