Notice the way in which the performers whiten their faces by the use of fine cerial flour.' The prints mostly relate to Westgate’s earlier work, but there are a few from the 1930s, including nos. 426-454 of visits to South Africa and African islands, all processed in February 1936. 210 x 160 mm. The caption continues: 'First grade cloves. Note that all cloves have 'heads'. There are in fact the main parts of the flower bud (a mass of stamens enclosed in small bracts). If the clove bud opens before it is picked and dried then the clove will have lost its 'head' and the quality of the sample reduced.'
