A three-part series of black and white images on card designed to provide teachers with material to illustrate history lessons. The series includes a wide range of pictures, portraits and photographs. Titles and captions have been recorded as found and may contain offensive, inappropriate or outdated terms. The items are undated, but probably originate from between the 1960s and 1980s.

(7, 9 and 11 Adderley Street) is presumably at the farther end of the street...

40 x 65 mm. (Vignetted oval). A carte de visite half length studio portrait of the bearded Captain Van der Ven. Wilhelmus J. Van der Ven is listed as living at Sea Point in The Cape of Good Hope Directory and Almanac for 1868. By 1879 he is listed as a wine merchant residing at Arnheim House, Buitencingel. In the 1880 edition, he is listed as being in Europe and does not appear in the 1882 edition.

Scope and Contents From the File: The early photographs in this section were taken during two visits to Kokstad in the east of the province; the first at the end of 1965 followed John Ewart Marnham's visit to Lesotho; the remainder dated August 1967. A number of purely family photographs have been removed.
