Showing an unidentified two storey residential house, of stone and with a tiled roof, tentatively identified on the reverse as Batu Gojah, a town in the Kinta district, 67 miles from Taiping and eight miles south of Ipoh. Batu Gojah was the district headquarters of the Kinta division and this photograph, of a fairly imposing residence possibly shows the Collector and Magistrate's house.

The photograph was taken during the military occupation of Perak by Major McNair. McNair (1878, p. 168-169) gives this description: 'The residence of the Princess of Perak at Quella Kungsa gives - as will be seen in the illustration, from a photograph taken by the author during the Governors progress - a very full idea of a Malay noble...

A view showing the Court house and adjacent offices, a mainly two- storey building (with a further storey above the main entrance section) raised on brick piles with a verandah running the length of the first floor, and with a tiled roof. The court house was completed, after various delays, in 1881, and the photograph was likely taken soon after.

Scope and Contents 204 x 151 mm. A view looking down onto a partially constructed stepped culvert on the Taiping-Kuala Kangsar line, with earth works and boulders in the background. A note on the reverse reads: 'There are three culverts in the ravine. The man sitting on the boulder gives an idea of the size of things'. Railway extensions from Taiping eastwards to Kuala Kangsar were contemplated as early as 1888, the Resident Engineer reporting that "while such a line might not prove immediately...
