The barracks of the Perak Armed Police in Taiping were built in 1881-1882. This print forms the right hand of a panorama when joined to the preceding photograph.

242 x 169 mm. A view looking over part of the prison stockade towards wooded hills in the direction of Kamunting, two miles north-north-west of Taiping. In the foreground are a number of atap houses, with the brick wall of the prison beyond and a wooded palisade enclosing some of the prison buildings. The unsatisfactory state of the prison is described in the Perak Annual Report for 1884 (enclosed in Further correspondence respecting the Protected Malay States (C. 4958 of 1887, p. 23).

A note on the reverse of the print indicates that the houses are probably those running along Main Street. By the end of 1874 Taiping had a population of around 5000.
