Scope and Contents From the Sub-Fonds: Fifty-three undated watercolours intended as bookmarks, each 200 x 45 mm in size, sold by John Sands of Sydney as indicated by stickers pasted onto the reverse. The images are of birds, with the exception of two koala bears, two kangaroos and one opossum. The vast majority are the work of three authors, signed Artah, M. Simpson and Koddi. Artah is Violet Artah Bartlett, an artist specialising in Australian ornithology who worked in Sydney during the 1920s. It has proved impossible as yet...

Sham Fight, Sydney Harbour, 1872 - 1895

Scope and Contents 245 x 180 mm. Oval print. A view across the harbour towards Fort Denison, with a mock battle in progress beyond the fort. The harbour is dotted with small craft and a paddle ferry can be seen to the left of the fort, packed with passengers. The exact year, or event celebrated, has not been determined. Sydney has held a regatta every year since 1837, although this is presumably a re-enactment of a specific happening. Jack Cato, records that Charles Kerry in 1895 'covered the big aquatic...

A view of moored sailing ships, tied three deep to the shore. Stockton lies just north of Newcastle, on a peninsula the other side of the Hunter River. Like Newcastle it is an important coal producer; in the early days of the colony, the worst convicts from Newcastle were sent to Stockton as lime-burners.

186 x 127 mm. oval print. A view showing two three-masted steamers at anchor, with parts of a large city visible on the far side of the harbour, bearing a resemblance to Sydney. Sydney would certainly be the obvious port of call for leave and business matters, and Powell did have a number of correspondents there.
