Post Office, Sydney comp. 1887, 1875
280 x 230 mm. A view of the unfinished building from George Street. The fenced-off land to the left, along which the building extends, was later to become Martin Place. This monumental building, which took over 20 years to complete, was designed by James Barnet. Work started in 1866. The tower, not yet built in this photograph, was completed in 1887.

Prince Alfred Hospital, 1895 - 1900
202 x 147 mm. A view of the hospital from Missenden Road, Camperdown, showing a brick building with stone facings. The hospital was incorporated in 1873 as a gesture of gratitude for the saving of Prince Alfred's life, who was the victim of an assassination attempt while in Sydney. The land for the hospital was granted by the university, and the hospital is used by the university's medical students. The hospital was opened to patients in 1882.
Prince's Street, Church Hill, 1870 - 1879
277 x 183 mm. View of a terrace of modest two storey sandstone houses with dormer windows. The house on the right is dated 1849 on the cartouche above the roofline. The brick houses which continue the terrace to the left are of later date. In the centre of the group is James Lucas' Auckland Hotel, and next door to him the shop of G.E. Coy.

190 x 140 mm. A view of the building from the junction of Macquarie Street and Bridge Street. Another building designed by James Barnet (in 1878), it is an imposing structure with statues in recesses at the corner, and was originally the Colonial Secretary's Office.

232 x 183 mm. Information given states '(New superstructure on old piers), 3 spans 75 feet each, 2 spans 60 feet, total length 345 feet'. A view showing the bridge beyond a curve in the river, with figures in front of the bridge which is a wooden superstructure on wooden supports.

Railway Bridge over River Hawkesbury, Queensland [sic], 1888 - 1889
138 x 82 mm. A view from above looking down on the iron girder railway bridge, part of the Newcastle to Sydney system, which was opened in 1889. It was also the final link in the railway system, which now extended from Brisbane to Adelaide, via Melbourne and Sydney. The bridge was designed by John Whitton and was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It was situated in New South Wales.
Railway over Blue Mountains, 1870 - 1880
229 x 190 mm. A view of part of the Lithgow zig-zag, the engineering feat of John Whitton which allowed the railway to descend on a manageable gradient from the Blue Mountains. For a fine panorama of the Lithgow zig-zag, and more detail on its construction see Y3086E/51.

A good view of the interior of a railway workshop, showing partially-constructed locomotives at the right of the picture, workmen posing for the camera in the centre, and a row of small furnaces at the left for metal working. Across the roof of the workshop a movable gantry and crane is positioned.
