Iron Cove Bridge, Sydney, 1885

190 x 140 mm. A view of the iron girder bridge which connected the suburbs of Balmain and Drummoyne across Iron Cove, which was part of the 'Five Bridges Road' connecting the city and the north-side suburbs. This bridge, originally erected in 1884, was replaced in the 1950's.

Above the platform hangs an ornate sign offering 'Refreshments', beneath which stand four waitresses; 'The largest and most complete refreshment rooms on the railway has been established here, ample time being allowed by all passenger trains for travellers to obtain refreshment.' Scope and Contents From the Sub-Fonds: Fifty-three undated watercolours intended as bookmarks, each 200 x 45 mm in size, sold by John Sands of Sydney as indicated by stickers pasted onto the reverse. The images are of birds, with the exception of two koala bears, two kangaroos and one opossum. The vast majority are the work of three authors, signed Artah, M. Simpson and Koddi. Artah is Violet Artah Bartlett, an artist specialising in Australian ornithology who worked in Sydney during the 1920s. It has proved impossible as yet...
