The subjects are rural scenes: woodlands, grasslands, rivers, bridges, and coastline. Several farms are featured, including images of crops, livestock, buildings and residences, as well as European and Aboriginal farming families.

It reproduces fourty-five photographs contained in an album whose origin is unknown apart from an inscription in a childish hand on one page: 'For dearest Mother from Wilfred 5 May 1883.' This is very different from the handwriting on the caption of a photograph on the same page, and on most of the rest of the collection. One item is dated 1875, and a number are dated 1885.
