122 x 122 mm. A view showing a man, possibly a correspondent, beside his camel watching a wounded dervish on the battlefield. Another aspect of the battle that came in for later criticism was the killing of wounded dervishes. In many cases, however, there was little else the advancing army could do since throughout all the Sudan campaigns it was dervish practice to fight to the death and several men were killed and wounded while attempting to help the fallen.

Scope and Contents From the File: A collection of photographs on 41 album sheets. Typed on a piece of paper stuck on one album sheet is: 'ALBUM 2. All the photographs in this album were taken by me, on a safari from Victoria (B. Cameroons) to Port Sudan. This journey lasted from April 7/35 till August 2/36. 'Reise journal der expedition am Weissen Flusse-Central Afrika' describing Knoblecher's journey south from Khartoum to Gondokoro and Rejaf, 1849-1850. This is a transcription in German from the original in Codex 14152, 'Biblioteca Palatina Vindobonensis', Vienna, made by Richard Gray for his 'A history of Southern Sudan' (1961).
