Scope and Contents 194 x 234 mm. A view looking along the Tokwani River with dense forest vegetation on either bank. The photograph was taken in early August. This is most probably the scene described in Surridge's lecture: 'On the smaller river, the Tokwani, one fairy glen specially may be mentioned. The large trees formed a perfect avenue overhead, and so thick was the overhanging foliage that the brilliant sunlight was almost obscured. Beneath were palms, growing to a height of about seven or eight...

Showing the premises of the Standard Bank of South Africa's Salisbury branch. This brick building, faced with cement and only recently erected at the time of this photograph on the corner of Third Street and Jameson Avenue, was replaced by a larger headquarters in 1928.

Showing part of the camp with the searchlight and steam engine (see Y3052A/30) at the left of the print, a row of wagons and men and equipment in the foreground. The location is presumably Impadi rather than Impagi, a spot about two thirds of the way between Tuli and the Umzingwane. The advance road making party reached the Umzingwane on July 10th, the day before the main body set out from Fort Tuli. The main column would have reached Impadi on about July 14th 1890.

Scope and Contents An album containing mounted prints measuring approximately 240 x 180 mm, with captions beneath the prints written in a fine copperplate hand. The photographs show scenes taken between June and September 1890 during the Pioneer trek in what was later to be Southern Rhodesia (currently Zimbabwe). On July 9 1891, soon after his return to England, Surridge delivered a lecture to the Royal Colonial Institute, entitled 'Matabeleland and Mashonaland'. This talk was illustrated with lantern...
