Scope and Contents A collection of coloured slides, 18 of which measure 40 x 40 mm, the remainder 35 mm, all mounted 50 x 50 mm, relating to Commonwealth Universities, with the exception of 33 of non-Commonwealth Universities which were, however, associated with the Inter-University Council for Higher Education Overseas (IUC). Many, though not all, were taken by Ian Maxwell, formerly Deputy Director of IUC. Though some have minimal identification, others have substantial annotations on the mounts. ...

The rest of the images are uncaptioned, but their general locations have been identified by reference to the diary RCMS 353/1.

Kaffir Kraal, Mcabusi [Makabusi] River [historic title], 1890

Showing a group of Mashonas standing beside circular thatched huts with similar buildings perched on the granite boulders in the background. The original destination of the column had been Mount Hampden, but on crossing the Makabusi Pennefeather and the advance party found a kopje (suitable for fortification) surrounded by land far better than the marshy ground around Mount Hampden and here it was decided to make the settlement. Photograph taken about 10th–12th September.

The exact location of Zimonto’s (Somoto’s) Kraal is not specified, but it presumably lay a short distance north of Fort Victoria. See Y3052B/8-9 for F.H. Surridge's photograph of the village, which he described in ‘Mashonaland and Matabeleland’ R.C.I. Proceedings, Vol XXII, 1890-1, 'Somoto's village, by the soft red rays of a tropical setting sun, was a picture not soon to be forgotten. In...

Scope and Contents Showing pioneer wagons laagered in a circle near the Tuli River with the searchlight steam-engine visible in the background (see Y3052A/30). Tuli was reached on July 1 and occupied until July 11 when a column consisting of 180 pioneers, 200 police, 62 wagons and a number of small prospecting parties started to cross the Tuli River. This party was preceded by Captain Hoste and B Troop who crossed the river on July 6 and forged ahead cutting the road towards the Umzingwani River 50 miles from...

Letters written by Agnes Loxton to her cousin Michael Warren in England, 1970-1987, giving an insight into the political situation for whites in Bulawayo. There is also an abstract of the letters prepared by Professor Michael Warren, biographical details about Agnes Loxton and her family and three newspaper cuttings on Zimbabwe of 15-21 November 2001. The papers are accompanied by two letters from Professor Warren to the R.C.S., 31 December 2001 and 12 October 2002.
