Additional information on the caption states: ‘This is a combined road and railway bridge over the River Rakaia, in the Provincial District of Canterbury, on the main trunk line between Christchurch and Dunedin. The total length, 4,480 feet, made up of 224 spans of 20 feet each. The first contract was let on the 7th October, 1869, and the bridge was completed for railway traffic on 29th May, 1873; cost, about £36,000’.

RCI Post-War Settlement Mission, 1915 - 1916
Archives relating to a mission to South Africa, Rhodesia, Australia, New Zealand and Canada undertaken by Sir Henry Rider Haggard on behalf of the RCI to investigate possibilities of post WWI settlement of ex-servicemen. Haggard's report was published as 'The After-War Settlement & Employment of Ex-Service Men in the Overseas Dominions' in 1916.
