Additional information on the caption states: ‘This is a combined road and railway bridge over the River Rakaia, in the Provincial District of Canterbury, on the main trunk line between Christchurch and Dunedin. The total length, 4,480 feet, made up of 224 spans of 20 feet each. The first contract was let on the 7th October, 1869, and the bridge was completed for railway traffic on 29th May, 1873; cost, about £36,000’.

Scope and Contents A photocopy of a report in Maori by Parakaia Te Pouepa of a meeting of chiefs from Manawatu (Palmerston North), Waikanae, Otaki, Ngati Toa of Porirua, Waikato and Te Arawa (Roturua area) at Otaki on 17 September 1861. The meeting discussed the setting up of a Maori King in the Waikato Area. Most of the chiefs were opposed to this idea, and accepted Queen Victoria's representative, Colonel Thomas Gore Browne, as the chief of the country. They passed a motion that a letter should be written...

A view showing part of the Pink Terrace Cascade. ‘Its terraces, formed of a peculiar pink-coloured siliceous deposit, extend by gentle descents, one below the other, down to the edge of the lake… ‘Rotomahana and the Boiling Springs of New Zealand’ by D.L. Mundy and F. Von Hochstetter (Sampson Low, London 1875).
