Scope and Contents
351 x 265 mm. A view from the river bank looking along the bridge. Additional information on the caption states: ‘This is a combined road and railway bridge over the River Rakaia, in the Provincial District of Canterbury, on the main trunk line between Christchurch and Dunedin. The total length, 4,480 feet, made up of 224 spans of 20 feet each. The first contract was let on the 7th October, 1869, and the bridge was completed for railway traffic on 29th May, 1873; cost, about £36,000’.
