Wellington, 1870-01
Wellington, 1870 - 1880
206 x 135 mm. A view looking down on Thorndon Flat from Aurora Terrace, showing St Mary’s Roman Catholic Cathedral at the extreme left (burnt down in 1898) and Parliament House and Government House at the centre of the photograph with Port Nicholson in the background. Plates 94, 96, and 98, while not forming a close-fitting panorama, nearly constitute a linked view of Wellington from the area around Government House to Te Aro. Photograph by James Bragge c 1874.
Wellington, 1870 - 1880
218 x 215 mm. A view showing continuation of Plate 93 looking down on the town with Lambton Harbour, Queen’s Wharf and Te Aro in the background. (The panorama is continued in Plate 97.) In the foreground can be seen the junction of Tinakori Road with Molesworth, Murphy and Park Streets. Photograph by James Bragge, January 1870.
Wellington, 1870 - 1880
218 x 135 mm. A view looking down on Grey Street and Queen’s Wharf where a number of sailing ships are moored with Lambton Harbour and Port Nicholson in the background.
Wellington, 1870 - 1880
211 x 143 mm. A continuation of the panorama of Wellington, the other components being Plates 93 and 95. This print shows the rising ground behind the City with the Terrace, Bolton Street, Upper Tinakori Road and Grant Road visible in the picture. The four cottages in the foreground, in Grant Road, are military quarters. It is noticeable in this photograph how the land quickly becomes less crowded away from the harbour, with small cottages and bungalows, fields and partially cleared land.
Wellington, 1870 - 1880
211 x 143 mm. A view looking down on Te Aro Flat from the Terrace with Lambton Harbour at the left of the picture. In the foreground, at the junction of Willis and Manners Streets, stands the Duke of Edinburgh hotel. Just behind it can be seen Bragge’s own photographic studio. This picture is one of a series Bragge took entitled ‘Wellington from the Terrace’, c 1873.
Wellington from Catholic Cemetery, 1880
183 x 145 mm. A view looking down from the hill behind the city on to Te Aro Flat, Lambton Harbour and Port Nicholson, with Mt Victoria in the background. For other photographs of Wellington taken from a similar position in the 1870s by James Bragge, see Y308B/93-98.

Wellington N.Z., 1885
222 x 146 mm. A view looking over houses towards Lambton Harbour with Queen’s Wharf and Te Aro Flat in the distance. The picture has been taken from just above the junction of Tinakori Road with Molesworth Murphy and Park Streets. Plate Y308B/95 is taken from an almost identical spot some years earlier (in fact in January 1870) and makes an interesting comparison in the building that has gone on in the intervening period.
Wellington Wharf, 1899
198 x 143 mm. A view looking along Queen's Wharf, showing warehouses and moored shipping. Nicholson Harbour and Mount Victoria are visible in the background.
