The picture has been taken from just above the junction of Tinakori Road with Molesworth Murphy and Park Streets. Plate Y308B/95 is taken from an almost identical spot some years earlier (in fact in January 1870) and makes an interesting comparison in the building that has gone on in the intervening period.

Burton’s use of the word Wharepuni seems inexact in these pictures, this term referring to houses with earth piled up at the sides for warmth.
