Situated 17 miles south-west of Seremban and the principal sea resort of Negri [i.e. Negeri] Sembilan, the town was originally known as Arang-Arang but was renamed Port Dickson in 1889 after Sir John Frederick Dickson (1835-1891) (Colonial Secretary of the Straits Settlements 1885-1891).
