The island of Labuan at the entrance to Brunei Bay was ceded to Great Britain by the Sultan of Brunei in 1846 and became a Crown Colony in 1848. From 1890-1906 it was administered as part of British North Borneo and from 1907-1912 as a part of the Straits Settlements. Numbered in bottom left hand corner on the negative '550. Lady Swettenham collection (Malaya and Jamaica)

Photographs by various photographers and three other items. They relate to the career of James Alexander Swettenham, who, after serving in Ceylon and Cyprus, became Colonial Secretary in Singapore in 1895. He was Governor of British Guyana 1901-1904 and of Jamaica 1904-1907. His period in Singapore coincided with the service in Malaya of his more famous brother, Sir Frank Swettenham. Their father was James Oldham Swettenham, Solicitor of Belper.

Maundrell was killed by a Sikh policeman while serving as acting Resident, Brunei; Ernest Charteris Holford WOLFF...
