Astana (Bukit Petri), Kuala Trengganu, 1920 - 1939

A view taken during an unidentified occasion at the Sultan of Trengganus palace, looking down onto the lawn in front of the building where a contingent of Malay soldiers and a military band is on parade. Groups of officials and other spectators are gathered at the edge of the lawn and in front of the palace itself.

The officials and servatns holding umbrellas near the entrance to the Astana are turned away from the camera, presumably waiting for the Sultan to emerge.

The central figure is Sir Michael Henry WHITLEY (1872-1959), Attorney General of the Straits Settlements from 1925-1929 and the group, which only includes one other European, probably shows members of his staff.

Autobiographical note, 1903 - 1961-07
Memoir by A.R. Chancellor of his service with the colonial police in Barbados and the Straights Settlements (7 sheets), with correspondence relating to its acquisition. There is a second brief note entitled 'My two adventures with crocodiles', probably also written by Chancellor.
The file contains two photographs, the first of Chancellor as C.P.O. Malacca [Melaka], taken in 1905, and the second of a Melakan police constable in 1903.
