Scope and Contents
Memoir by A.R. Chancellor of his service with the colonial police in Barbados and the Straights Settlements (7 sheets), with correspondence relating to its acquisition. There is a second brief note entitled 'My two adventures with crocodiles', probably also written by Chancellor.
The file contains two photographs, the first of Chancellor as C.P.O. Malacca [Melaka], taken in 1905, and the second of a Melakan police constable in 1903.

Biographical / Historical
A.R. Chancellor joined the British Army in 1893 and was seconded to the Barbados Police in 1895. He joined the Straights Settlements Police Force in 1902. After initial service in Singapore, Chancellor was appointed Chief Police Officer of Malacca [Melaka]. In 1905 he returned to Singapore to organise the Tanjong Pagar Dock Police. Chancellor became Chief Police Officer at Singapore in 1907, and was confirmed as Inspector General of Police in 1914, in which rank he served until his retirement in 1923.
