Scope and Contents

162 x 90 mm. A formal group portrait of the officials present at the 1932 durbar held at Sri Menanti, palace of the Yang di-Petuan Besar at Seremban. The figures in the group are: [?] Al-Mutasim Billah al-Sultan ABDULLAH (d 1932); Sultan of Pahang circa 1918-1932. Brysons caption identified this figure as Sultan Ahmad, but this is surely incorrect: Sultan Ahmad (circa 1881-1938) had ruled Pahang since 1865. On his death in 1914 his son Mahmad succeeded him and he in turn was succeeded by Sultan Abdullah in either 1917 or 1918; Sultan ISKANDAR SHAH, ibn Idris (circa 1881-1938); Sultan of Perak 1918-1938; Sir Cecil CLEMENTI (1875-1947); Governor of the Straits Settlements and High Commissioner for Malaya 1930-1934; Tuanku MUHAMMAD; Sir LALIDIN [i.e. Allaidin ?] SULAIMAN SHAH (1865-1938); Sultan of Selangor 1896-1938; Raja UDA; A.D.C. to Sir Cecil Clementi; Hugh Goodwin Russell LEONARD (1880-); Malayan Civil Service 1903-1935; British Resident Pahang, 1930-1935; Bertram Walter ELLES (1877-); Malayan Civil Service 1900-1932; British Resident, Perak 1932; (Sir) Andrew CALDECOTT (1885-1951); Malayan Civil Service 1907-1935; Chief Secretary to Government, F.M.S. 1931-1933; later Governor of Hong Kong (1935-1937) and Ceylon (1937-1944); John Whitehouse Ward HUGHES, British Resident; James William SIMMONS; British Resident, Pahang; (Sir) John Stuart MACPHERSON (1898-1971); Malay Civil Service 1921-1937; Clerk to Durbar; later Governor of Nigeria (1948-1954).
