Claude Sitwell and Uganda 1895-1899

Scope and Contents Claude George Henry Sitwell (1858-1900) followed his father into the British Army, initially as a militia subaltern. He served in the Afghan War of 1879-1880, and in Egypt during 1882. Sitwell was a Captain in the Manchester Regiment attached to the Egyptian Army when he accepted employment in the civil administration of Uganda in 1895. Sitwell was recruited because his recent experience in Egypt and knowledge of Arabic made him well-qualified to lead the Sudanese troops which formed...

Scope and Contents This is a complete manuscript copy (358 pages) of Sitwell's diary with the same pagination as the original, made by H.B. Thomas, 1936-1937. Its entries are telegraphic. Some notes on Sitwell by Thomas, including a family tree, are inserted loose, and a record of his military service has been tipped onto the rear flyleaf. Sitwell's diary narratives his journey from London to East Africa, where he arrived in June 1895. He was soon after engaged in military expeditions against the...

95 x 68 mm. A indisnct print showing Ormsby punting across the river on a wooden raft, with a group of African workmen standing in the background. Sidney William Ormsby (1872-1909) was temporarily engaged for road construction in Uganda in 1901. He later became Transport Officer for the Protectorate (1902) and Collector for Mbale (1908).
