The photograph was used as the inspiration for a double page drawing in The Illustrated London News of September 25 1909. The text, quoting Bell, explains how the young men of the village are shut in their huts at night and the ladders removed to prevent them roaming.

Showing Frank Burton repairing his bicycle beside the road. Several sections of the 1907 tour were completed on bicycle by Bell and Burton ('25th January. The road from the frontier to Mbarara was in excellent order and we were able to cycle almost the whole way ...', Bell (1946), page 151).
