Scope and Contents 101 x 151 mm. Showing the tablet erected in 1875 to Sir George Somers near the spot where his heart was interred in Bermuda. Somers was wrecked in Bermuda in 1609 and after building another boat on the island left with supplies for the Virginia Company's settlement at Jamestown (his original mission). On arrival they found the settlers starving and Somers volunteered to return to Bermuda for more supplies. He died however in Bermuda in1610, urging his men on his deathbed to return to...

[Lt-Gen. Sir Alexander Hood, Governor of Bermuda], 1951 - 1953

The Governor of Bermuda signing a document, with O. R. Arthur standing by him. Hood (1888-1980) was a doctor who ended a military career as Director of Army Medical Services, 1941-48. He was Governor of Bermuda from 1949 until his retirement in 1955. Sir Winston Churchill commented 'I like Hood' and Lord Moran wrote of him: 'Hood is a full-blooded red-faced Scot with no neck to speak of, as if he had stepped down from a Raeburn portrait for our correction'.

Mrs Arthur, Lady Spring-Rice and the dog Moppet, in the Arthur's house in Somerset. Florence Caroline, daughter of Frank Lascelles was married to Sir Cecil Spring Rice, Diplomat and poet, in 1904; he died in 1918 when British Ambassador to the United States of America; she died on 9 December 1961.
