126 x 115 mm. Showing land being cleared of vegetation at the edge of a lake. The caption on the reverse reads: 'Throughout the area selected for resettlement, protective clearing of the tsetse breeding places had to be carried out. Large gangs of paid labour are necessary to carry out new clearance but maintenance work is largely under-taken by the people on a communal basis. It is found that satisfactory maintenance can be achieved if each adult male gives four days' labour a year'.

A collection including a black album, containing 29 photographs and with eight blank sides, and loose prints and negatives, relating to the career of Sir Crampton Smyly. There are typed captions which have been used as the basis of catalogue entries. As well as photographs of the visit to Sierra Leone of the Duke of Connaught on 15 December 1910, there are numerous photographs of events of 1929, the year in which Sir Crampton Smyly retired.

Soldiers returning from East African Campaign, 1918 - 1919
195 x 145 mm. A group of African soldiers in the foreground includes some wounded and disabled. The main parade can be seen in the background. Soldiers from the Gold Coast served in Togo, the Cameroons and East Africa. See ‘The Gold Coast Regiment in the East African Campaign’ by Sir Hugh Clifford (1920) and H.A. Gailey Clifford (1982) pp. 84-86. The photograph was probably taken on the return of the Regiment in September 1918, but the parade is not mentioned in either book.
