140 x 190 mm. on mount. Studio portrait, seated. Signed and dated ‘James Crawford Maxwell 4 July 1925’. Sir James Crawford Maxwell (1869-1932) doctor, lawyer, and administrator served as a District Medical Officer in Sierra Leone from 1894 to 1900, when he became a District Commissioner. He was a First Class Resident in Nigeria from 1914 to 1920, Colonial Secretary, Sierra Leone 1920-1922, and Colonial Secretary of the Gold Coast from then until 1927, when he was appointed Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Northern Rhodesia, a post from which he retired in 1932.
