Market Square, Lydenburg, 1873 - 1879
190 x 142 mm. Showing the Market Square at Lydenburg, a grass covered opened space, crossed by a path and lined with single-storey buildings. The Market appears to be part of the main street rather than a square as such. Among the buildings are a billiard room (with building work in progress) and the premises of Francey and Jansen. Probably by H. Ferdinand Gros.

138 x 98 mm. Showing long spans of oxen drawn up in the Market Square. On the right is the ‘Diamond Store’ drapery owned by James Fordred, with the smaller premises of William Jones’ ‘Joppa Tannery’ and furniture store beside it. The Terminus Hotel is at the adjacent corner on the Jetty Street side of the square. A small portion of the Post Office (Y3059V/5) can be seen at the extreme left.

'Mathai Thai', Mamathes, Basutoland [Lesotho], 1948
'The Basuto sun hat is of open weave, providing plenty of air space, and a moving pattern of shade on the head. It is a favourite with both ·men and women and assumes many shapes. Facial markings were common to Basuto women formerly, but are now seldom seen. A woman wears her blanket pinned in front, a man's· blanket being pinned on the right shoulder. Aprons and many-tucked long skirts are typical wear among Basuto women, and reflect the missionary influence of Victorian days.'

A scrapbook album containing prints relating to Bell's Governorship of Mauritius from his return from leave in 1919 to his final departure in 1924. There are also some scenes in east Africa and Britain during his 1919 leave and some of a visit to Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka) in 1921.
